Media worker found dead

Staff Reporter:

The body of a female media worker from the online news outlet Dhaka Stream was recovered from her residence in the capital on Saturday evening.

Sher-e-Banglanagar Police Station OC Emaul Haque said the woman’s family broke down the door and took her to a private hospital, where police later recovered the body and prepared a post-mortem report. The cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy. No complaint has been filed yet.

The woman, a graphic
designer at Dhaka Stream, was reportedly among those who had lodged a sexual harassment complaint against the outlet’s Bengali content editor, Altaf Shahnewaz. Social media users claimed Altaf was reinstated instead of being punished.

Dhaka Stream’s Editor-in-Chief Iftekhar Mahmud said an official statement would be issued. Later, the organisation stated that Altaf had been withdrawn from the newsroom following an internal probe that confirmed misconduct but denied any link between the woman’s death and the earlier complaint.

Women’s rights groups, including Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and Amrai Pari Family Violence Prevention Alliance, expressed grave concern over the incident, calling for better workplace safety for women.
