No safe exit but death for negligent Advisers: Sarjis

There will be “no safe exit other than death” for advisers in the interim government who are trying to shirk responsibility by performing their duties half-heartedly in hopes of quietly leaving after the upcoming national election, said National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam on Tuesday.

“Some advisers believe they can get away with merely completing formalities and then exit through the election process. But a post-uprising government cannot be run with such negligence,” Sarjis told reporters following a coordination meeting of NCP’s district and upazila units in Naogaon.

“They stand on the sacrifices of countless martyrs. If they continue this way, they will not be able to face the people of Bangladesh. For them, there is no safe exit but death. No matter where they flee, the people will hold them accountable,” he warned.

Criticising the Election Commission, the NCP leader alleged that it is “desperately trying” to grant registration to a party called the Bangladesh National League, which he claimed “exists only within a small room beside a toilet.”

Sarjis insisted that registration should not be issued under outdated criteria. “Every detail must be properly verified. If this is an attempt to rebrand or rehabilitate the Awami League under a new name, neither the people nor the NCP will accept it,” he declared.

Regarding the NCP’s electoral symbol, he said, “There is no legal barrier to using the Shapla [water lily] symbol. Yet the Election Commission, despite being a constitutional and independent body, is showing arbitrary behaviour or acting under pressure during this post-uprising period.
“This will not be tolerated. We expect the commission to uphold its independence and perform its duties with honesty and courage.”
