PR poll possible if all parties agree: Golam Porwar
Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar has said that a proportional representation (PR)-based election is possible if all political parties reach a consensus.
He said, “There are six types of PR systems that can be adopted. If all political parties agree, an election under the PR system can certainly be held. Under this system, nomination trading and the influence of black money would be eliminated. Only through a PR-based election can we establish an accountable governance system and ensure that the people’s desired representatives are truly elected.”
He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled “Stand Against Indian Hegemony – Shaheed Abrar Fahad Day”, organized by the National Democratic Party-JAGPA at the National Press Club on Monday. The discussion was presided over by JAGPA Vice-President and party spokesperson Rashed Pradhan. Recalling the memory of Abrar Fahad, Golam Porwar further said, “Abrar, the meritorious student of BUET, used to call his peers for prayers.
Seeing his religious practices, the killers from the Chhatra League brutally murdered him, suspecting him to be a member of Shibir. Before his death, Abrar asked for water, but the killers didn’t even give him that. Similarly, Biswajit was hacked to death in broad daylight in Old Dhaka just on suspicion of being a Shibir member. Abrar Fahad posted a Facebook status protesting the fascist Hasina government’s illegal deals with India – that was his only ‘crime.’ He was killed for that. Abrar Fahad remains an inspiration for us. As a patriotic citizen, he could never accept Indian dominance over our country.”
The event, moderated by JAGPA Publication Secretary S. M. Ziaul Anwar, was also addressed by Islami Andolan Bangladesh Presidium Member Ashraf Ali Akand, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish Secretary General Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmed, Khelafat Majlish Naib-e-Ameer Maulana Ahmed Ali Qasemi, Nezame Islami Party Secretary General Musa Bin Izhar, JAGPA General Secretary Professor Iqbal Hossain, JAGPA Presidium Member Asadur Rahman Khan, freedom fighter Syed Shafiqul Islam, Haji Md Hasmat Ullah, former Islami Chhatra Shibir President Manjurul Islam, Jubo JAGPA President Nazrul Islam Babul, Sramik JAGPA President Asaduzzaman Babul, and Dhaka Metropolitan Member Secretary Ashraful Islam Hasu, among others.
On the current political situation and upcoming election, Golam Porwar said, “To fulfill the people’s aspirations, we need a free and fair election under a non-partisan interim government. The existing state structure must be changed through political and constitutional reforms to build a new system of governance. Through these reforms, we must create a state mechanism where no new fascist or Hasina-like ruler can ever emerge again.”
He added, “In the upcoming election, an understanding seems to be forming between Islamic and patriotic forces. No hegemonic power should be allowed to obstruct that unity. At the same time, we must ensure fair and equal relations with India based on mutual respect and justice.”
At the event, Rashed Pradhan said, “Six years ago today, BUET student Abrar Fahad was brutally murdered by Chhatra League members. His only ‘crime’ was posting on Facebook against the treacherous subservience agreements Sheikh Hasina signed with India. His other ‘crime’ was calling fellow students to prayer. He was killed on Hasina’s orders to please India. Abrar taught us that the students and people of this country will never bow their heads to Indian hegemony.”
