Govt imposes ban on single-use plastics in secretariat today

In a decisive move to combat environmental pollution, the government has announced a complete ban on single-use plastics within the Secretariat, effective from Sunday.
A statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change emphasized that no one will be allowed to carry or use single-use plastic items inside the Secretariat premises.
“The initiative is aimed at setting a precedent in reducing the use of single-use plastics, which significantly threaten both the environment and public health,” the ministry said.
To ensure strict enforcement, a dedicated monitoring team has been deployed across the Secretariat. Items such as plastic bottles, cups, plates, and spoons will no longer be permitted during official meetings, seminars, or events.
The government is actively promoting eco-friendly alternatives, including jute, cloth, and reusable bags, as replacements for single-use plastics. In line with this, the ministry has instructed that all government procurement processes prioritize environmentally sustainable products.
Authorities have also urged all relevant departments, officials, and visitors to cooperate fully with the initiative, highlighting that this step is part of a broader national effort to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability in public institutions.
Environmental experts have lauded the move, noting that government offices adopting such measures can significantly influence public behaviour and encourage wider adoption of eco-friendly practices across society.
The ban is expected to reduce plastic waste generation in the Secretariat substantially and serve as a model for other government offices nationwide.
This initiative aligns with Bangladesh’s ongoing commitment to global environmental goals, including the reduction of plastic pollution and promotion of a circular economy.
