Gas Pipeline Blast Cuts Power, Supply Halted

Tangail Correspondent:
A major gas transmission pipeline of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited ruptured in the Shibpur area of Tangail Sadar upazila on Sunday morning, causing widespread disruptions in gas and electricity supply.

The incident occurred around 8:30am, resulting in the suspension of gas supply to approximately 12,500 residential connections and over 15 CNG filling stations in the district.

Adding to the crisis, a rural power line pole of Tangail Palli Bidyut Samity was situated directly over the damaged pipeline. As a result, electricity supply was also suspended in large parts of Tangail Sadar, Nagarpur, and Delduar upazilas, affecting nearly 200,000 electricity users.

Engineers and field workers from both Titas Gas and Palli Bidyut rushed to the site. According to Engr. Md. Sanoar Hossain, General Manager of Tangail Palli Bidyut Samity, efforts are underway to remove the power pole and safely restore power. “Nearly two lakh customers remain without electricity,” he confirmed.

Assistant Engineer of Titas Gas, Ramzan Ali Munna, stated that the exact cause of the pipeline rupture is still under investigation. “Around 14,000 domestic gas users and close to 50 CNG filling stations have been affected. We are working to isolate the damaged section and resume supply as soon as possible,” he said.

Local residents expressed concern over the infrastructure vulnerabilities and urged immediate action for permanent solutions. Authorities have cordoned off the area and advised caution until repair works are completed.

As of filing this report, emergency repair work was ongoing and power restoration efforts were being prioritized to minimize public inconvenience.
