500 Families Saved from River Erosion in Tangail Through DC’s Initiative

Emergency riverbank protection measures are currently underway along the left bank of the Dhaleshwari River in Omarpur and Charpauli areas under Kakua Union of Tangail Sadar Upazila.

As part of a short-term emergency response to sudden erosion, 510 meters of the riverbank are being reinforced with geo-tube and geo-bag dumping and placing. Tangail Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sharifa Haque formally inaugurated the protective work.

Also present at the inauguration were Executive Engineer of the Tangail Water Development Board Md. Matiur Rahman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Tangail Sadar Nahida Akter, and Upazila Engineer Zakir Hossain, among others.

DC Sharifa Haque stated that sudden river erosion on the left bank of the Dhaleshwari River had put households, croplands, rural roads, and educational institutions—including madrasas—at serious risk.

To mitigate the damage, emergency protective work covering 510 meters of the riverbank is being carried out at a cost of Tk 98.71 lakh. This initiative is expected to safeguard nearly 500 families, as well as local infrastructure and educational facilities. She added that a permanent project will be undertaken in the future to ensure long-term protection against erosion.
