The chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Abdul Momen, has said that verdicts in six corruption cases against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members are expected between late October and early November.

He made the remark on Wednesday while briefing the media following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and the ACC at the commission’s headquarters.

“Six cases against Sheikh Hasina and her family are currently under trial. After the completion of witness hearings, we hope the court will deliver its judgments either at the end of October or in early November, depending on its consideration,” Momen told reporters.

He also noted that initiatives are underway to revive the case against Tulip Siddiq, Hasina’s niece, which had been stayed by a High Court order.

Speaking on the ACC’s own accountability, Momen stressed the need for internal reform:
“If the ACC office itself is not free of corruption, then it has no moral right to call for reforms in other institutions. Our first responsibility is to cleanse ourselves of internal corruption. In this regard, the media is helping us the most,” he said.
