Police to Residents: Report AL activists in hotels, flats
Staff Reporter :
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has urged city residents to provide information if leaders and activists of the banned political party Awami League are found staying in residential hotels, flats, or student dormitories. Police have assured that the identities of informants will remain confidential.
The appeal came on Wednesday afternoon at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, where Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S.N. Md. Nazrul Islam briefed reporters.
He said police are conducting raids and maintaining intelligence surveillance across the capital. “Many Awami League activists are staying free of cost in various flats. If the public shares information with us, we will go there, arrest them, and this will reduce the number of flash processions,” he said.
According to the DMP, flash processions organized by the banned Awami League and its affiliated bodies have been a recurring law-and-order challenge. “We have already arrested several leaders and activists during such processions, often with the help of ordinary citizens,” Nazrul Islam said, calling for continued public cooperation in future arrests.
Police reported that 244 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its wings were arrested in the capital on Wednesday while attempting to stage sudden street demonstrations. Officers also recovered 14 crude bombs and seven banners during the raids.
The arrests were made in Uttara, Farmgate, and Tejgaon, with many of those detained reportedly coming from districts including Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Gazipur, and Gopalganj.
Nazrul Islam noted that in earlier phases of DMP’s ongoing crackdown, more than 500 activists had been detained from different areas of Dhaka. “Ahead of the election, they are trying to regroup and destabilize law and order,” he said.
Police reiterated that they will intensify monitoring in residential areas and urged citizens once again to assist law enforcement by reporting the presence of Awami League members in the capital.
