The Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has launched a drive against illegal vehicles in Sylhet since Monday. The drive began simultaneously at five points in the city from 8 am on Monday. Police said that at least 20 illegal auto-rickshaws were seized and taken for dumping during the drive until 11 am.
Police members took up positions in the city’s Mendibagh, Naiorpool, Jitu Mia Point, Rikabi Bazar and Pathantula areas since morning and started the drive against illegal vehicles. During this time, the documents of the vehicles plying on the road were checked. Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury also visited various points in the morning and supervised the drive.
While talking to the media, he said, we had given time to remove the illegal vehicles from the city. We also conducted miking in the city yesterday. We have started the drive against illegal CNG auto-rickshaws and battery-powered rickshaws from this morning.
He said, no illegal vehicles will be allowed to ply in Sylhet city.The police commissioner said, we are also thinking about removing the illegal CNG stands in the city. The parking places for the CNGs will be determined.
Earlier last week, the SMP issued five-point instructions to restore road order. The instructions said that battery-powered rickshaws, unregistered and vehicles with fake number plates will not be allowed to ply in the city. Auto-rickshaws will not be parked anywhere except at approved stands. In addition, it has been made mandatory for motorcycle drivers and riders to wear helmets.
SMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam said, miking is being done across the city to implement the instructions. The drive will start from Monday, and strict legal action will be taken against those who disobey the instructions.
Earlier, the SMP commissioner said that these instructions will be strictly implemented to reduce the suffering of the honorable citizens of the city and prevent road accidents. Under no circumstances will vehicles without authorization, without documents, or that violate the rules be allowed to operate in the city.
