Jamaat backs July Charter enforcement
Staff Reporter :
Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh has expressed support for implementing the July Charter through a constitutional order, said party Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan on Wednesday.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy, he added that the party also advocated for holding a referendum.
“The July Charter embodies the rightful demands of 18 crore people of Bangladesh,” Rafiqul Islam stated.
Another Assistant Secretary General, Hamidur Rahman Azad, clarified that so far only one of the four proposals from the commission’s legal experts has been taken up for discussion.
“If this option is accepted, the legal framework will be solid. While our statement may not fully align with the commission’s wording, we are in agreement on the core issues,” he noted.
He further remarked, “Denying the July Charter as a legitimate legal foundation means rejecting the July Spirit. The younger generation has already proven this through the recent student council polls.”
If a referendum is held, he believes the public will endorse the July Charter as the cornerstone of a new political structure.
“It would be ideal if the referendum is conducted before the upcoming national election,” he added.
Earlier in the day, the National Consensus Commission continued its third round of dialogue, engaging with political parties on the third consecutive day.
Following the session, Commission Vice-Chairman Prof Ali Riaz said that legal experts had proposed four possible paths to implement the July Charter – by ordinance, executive order, referendum, or a special constitutional order.
