Bangladesh has started exporting hilsa to India ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja, with the first consignment of 37,460 kilograms dispatched through Benapole land port early Wednesday.
This year, the government has authorised 37 exporters to ship 1,200 tonnes of hilsa to India for Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community.
Benapole Fisheries Inspection and Quality Control Officer Aswadul Islam confirmed that the government has set a 20-day window — from 16 September to 5 October — for completing the export. Hilsa, Bangladesh’s national fish, is highly sought after in neighbouring West Bengal, where demand peaks during the Durga Puja celebrations.
Six Bangladeshi firms made the initial shipment after quality inspections and clearance from fisheries authorities.
