A local leader of the ruling Awami League (AL) and Union Parishad (UP) member has been accused of illegally constructing a house on government khas land in Goyhata Union of Nagarpur upazila, Tangail.

The construction reportedly took place on Plot No. 3357 under Khas Khatian No. 1, which includes part of a canal. The accused, Zakir Talukder, is the son of former UP member Abul Kashem and nephew of Additional DIG Jahangir. Locals claim Zakir is also affiliated with the local Jubo League.

Residents allege that Zakir has long been involved in grabbing public land by misusing political influence. He is also accused of illegally selling topsoil from agricultural land.

In response to the allegation, Zakir admitted to building the house, stating, “The land documents and rent receipts are in my father’s name.” He also clarified that he holds no official post in the AL, though he had close ties with a former state minister.

Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Dip Bhowmik said, “We are investigating the matter. All claimants have been asked to submit documents. The land will be surveyed within 10 days, and any illegal structures on khas land will be removed in accordance with the law.
