Nepal Unrest: BD family attacked, looted
Diplomatic Correspondent :
A Bangladeshi family was assaulted and looted during violent protests in Kathmandu, Nepal, while at least 20 other Bangladeshis stranded in the capital have been rescued by the Bangladesh Embassy.
According to embassy officials, protesters stormed a hotel in Kathmandu on Tuesday, vandalising property and attacking guests.
Among them was a three-member Bangladeshi family who were beaten and robbed during the chaos. They were later evacuated and given shelter at the Bangladesh Embassy.
The same day, demonstrators also attacked the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kathmandu, where the Bangladeshi family had been staying.
In a separate incident, protesters set fire to a tourist vehicle that had been carrying passengers, including a young Bangladeshi woman.
Though she escaped unharmed, her bag containing money and passport was destroyed in the blaze.
The embassy confirmed it had rescued around 20 more Bangladeshis from Kathmandu, including 10 from Tribhuvan International Airport and another 10 from different locations in the city.
These individuals, who were scheduled to fly home on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, were safely relocated to the airline’s designated hotel.
Biman staffs have also been providing direct assistance and instructions to other passengers stranded in Nepal.
Amid escalating unrest in Nepal, Bangladesh’s interim government has stepped up efforts to ensure the safety and return of its nationals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has tasked the embassy in Kathmandu with maintaining round-the-clock communication with Bangladeshis in distress and coordinating with Nepali authorities.
Earlier this week, Dhaka announced contingency measures, including special assistance desks at Tribhuvan International Airport, temporary shelter facilities at the embassy, and arrangements with Biman Bangladesh Airlines for emergency repatriation if the situation worsens.
Officials stressed that bringing back stranded citizens remains a top priority of the interim government.
