‘Journalists key to fighting over rumors’

Information and Broadcasting Secretary MahbubaFarjana has said journalists can play a crucial role in delivering accurate information to members of the public for combating misinformation.
The information secretary made the remark on Tuesday while inaugurating a workshop titled “Digital Journalism” held at Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) in the capital.

MahbubaFarjana said journalists had played a valiant role during the July uprising in disseminating the news of the mass movement.

She said, “Apart from making supreme sacrifices by 1600 people in the mass upsurge, a huge number of protesters have suffered grievous injuries losing their limbs and even eyesight. Time has come to repay their debts. We have no party, no opinion, we only have July 24. Above party and opinion, July teaches us to uphold the truth and not to bow down.”

Emphasising the significance of enhancing journalistic skills, MahbubaFarjana said,“It is necessary for journalists to learn the modern methods of profession using mobile phones for capturingfootages, making videos, and editing them. During the July uprising, it was not just the writings that evoked public emotionthe photos and videos also played a pivotal role.”

PIB Director General FarukWasif said, “Journalists are not only the experts of disseminating information but they are the frontline warriors against fascism. If journalists do not speak the truth courageously, then society will become silent. Even the small town and district-level journalists can play an equally important role and the participation of journalists during the July uprising from around the country is proof of that. He urged the journalists to be vigilant against rumors and misinformation during the upcoming election.”
