Ex-secretary Shafiqul Islam arrested in anti-terrorism case, 6 AL men held

Former secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam has been detained in connection with a case alleging an anti-government conspiracy.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said that the Detective Branch (DB) arrested Shafiqul Islam along with seven other leaders and activists from the banned Awami League and its affiliated organizations.
According to DB Additional Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam, Shafiqul Islam was arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act in a case lodged with Shahbagh Police Station, after information about secret links with Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Abu Alam Shahid Khan, and others came to light.
Shafiqul Islam previously served as the secretary of the Planning Division in 2013. He was later appointed secretary to the President’s Office in 2015.
Earlier, on Monday, former secretary Abu Alam Mohammad Shahid Khan was also detained.
Meanwhile, former Awami League presidium member Abdul Latif Siddiqui and several others were shown as arrested after being detained from a ‘Manch 71’ event at Dhaka Reporters Unity, in the same case in which Shafiqul Islam was held.
