CA instructs ensuring peaceful DUCSU polls

Staff Reporter :

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday instructed law enforcement agencies to provide full cooperation to Dhaka University (DU) authorities to ensure a peaceful and festive environment during Tuesday’s Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections.

He issued the directive while chairing a high-level meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka, where the overall law and order situation of the country was reviewed.

Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, disclosed the matter at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy following the meeting.

“All-out support must be given to the university administration so that the DUCSU polls can be conducted smoothly in a festive and peaceful atmosphere,” the press secretary quoted the Chief Adviser as saying.

Professor Yunus noted that defeated and cornered fascist elements are becoming increasingly desperate as the nation heads toward elections and as the trials of those involved in the July massacre move forward.

“This is no longer just a law and order issue; it directly concerns national security. They are exerting all their strength to destabilize peace, stability, and the democratic progress of the nation,” he said.

According to Shafiqul Alam, the meeting resolved that there would be zero tolerance for anyone attempting to create unrest, considering the broader security interests of the country.

The government believes that unity between political parties and the people is essential for safeguarding national interests, he added.
The Chief Adviser also cautioned about possible attempts to spark unrest during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.

“Last year’s Durga Puja was celebrated in a peaceful environment under strong security arrangements. We must use that experience this year as well, taking precautionary measures in advance to avert any untoward incidents,” Shafiqul quoted him as saying.

The meeting also instructed the Ministry of Religious Affairs to engage with all faith-based organizations in order to strengthen communal harmony, noting that the Religious Affairs Adviser will soon hold meetings with such groups.

Shafiqul Alam further said that the meeting emphasized round-the-clock monitoring of the law and order situation and better coordination among security forces.

Local administrations were urged to remain more proactive, while the meeting also called for rebuilding the political unity that emerged after the July massacre and maintaining cordial relations among political parties.
Everyone was directed to stay vigilant to prevent any untoward incidents during the elections, he added.

Moreover, the press secretary noted that instructions were issued to intensify surveillance of sudden rallies, unauthorized gatherings, and processions, and to take firm legal action against those instigating such activities.

Deputy Press Secretaries to the Chief Adviser, Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Apurba Jahangir, were also present at the briefing.
