Over 1.5 lakh police to receive training for election duties

More than 1.5 lakh police members will undergo special training ahead of the upcoming national elections scheduled for February next year, officials confirmed on Friday.

“We are preparing training for over 1.5 lakh officers to ensure the elections are free, fair, neutral, and peaceful,” said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Quazi Zia Uddin while briefing journalists.

Uddin, who oversees human resources (HR) development at police headquarters (PHQ), expressed optimism that the polls would become a “milestone in the country’s history.”

According to him, the HR division has prepared nine separate training modules over the past three months, drawing on advice from election specialists and legal experts.

He praised the training package designed “under the dynamic leadership of the IGP and Additional IGP (HR),” describing it as “outstanding.”
The DIG said the courses are expected to fully equip police officers to manage any law and order challenges during the elections.

Bangladesh Police currently operates 130 smaller and four larger training centres across the country, where the modules will be rolled out.
As part of the programme, the PHQ has also developed two visual training tools-a 15-minute video and a nine-minute short film-alongside a detailed booklet.

Between August 31 and September 2, 150 master trainers were prepared at PHQ in Dhaka, Uddin said. Another 1,292 “trainers of trainers” (ToT) are set to be trained at 19 police training centres nationwide in the coming weeks.

These trainers will later pass on the lessons to over 1.5 lakh police personnel assigned to election duty.

“All trainers will undergo practical sessions, including simulated crisis scenarios that may emerge during the polls,” Uddin added, noting that the goal was to ensure comprehensive security coverage.

He further mentioned that PHQ plans to formally inaugurate the training programme later this week at Rajarbagh Police Lines.
