No bar to holding DUCSU polls

In a dramatic development, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division suspended the High Court order that had deferred the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election until 30 October.
The suspension came within just half an hour of the HC directive, after Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir, representing Dhaka University, lodged an appeal The High Court, on Monday, announced the DUCSU elections would be postponed until October 21 following a writ petition filed by leftist leader Fahmida Alam regarding the validity of DU Shibir President S M Farhad’s candidacy.
Immediately after the HC order, Dhaka University students erupted in protests, followed by separate protests by Chhatra Dal, Shibir and leftist student organizations, however, they returned to the hall after the jubilation ended when the decision to postpone the election was stayed following an application by Dhaka University lawyer Shishir Monir in the Chamber Court.
Dhaka University Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Shahos, during the protests, said there will be no excuse for any delay in the Dhaka University Central Student Union elections during the protests.
DU Chhatra Shibir president and GS candidate S M Farhad, who is being discussed over the writ, said in a Facebook status the DUCSU elections will have to be held on September 9 and this conspiracy will be thwarted.
Abdul Kader, VP candidate from ‘Baishamya Birodhi Shikkharthi Sangsad’ Panel, said, at a press conference, “the decision to hold the Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) elections will be taken by Dhaka University, not the High Court.”
On the other hand, the university’s public relations office, in a statement, said “the Dhaka University administration is committed to organizing fair, transparent and participatory DUCSU elections, the university’s public relations office said in a statement.”
