‘JaPa ban demand Valid’
Staff Reporter :
Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has described the demand to ban the Jatiyo Party as “valid” and pledged to examine the legal grounds for such action.
Speaking on Saturday (30 August) after inaugurating a new regional office of the National University in Jhenaidah, he said, “The Jatiyo Party played with the people and supported the Awami League’s repressive measures during controversial elections and even the July Uprising.
Therefore, the call to ban the party is justified. I will review the legal framework to see what can be done.”
Referring to Friday’s attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, the attorney general dismissed it as an isolated event, calling it part of a wider conspiracy. He condemned the incident as “heinous, condemnable, and criminal in nature.”
Asaduzzaman questioned why the Jatiyo Party should be treated differently, saying: “If Awami League’s activities can be banned for genocide, terrorism, and fascism, then why not the Jatiyo Party?”
Acknowledging limitations in law enforcement, he noted that while security forces may not be able to fully prevent mob violence, incidents are being brought under control quickly.
He attributed the unrest to “public resentment that has been building up for the past 17 years,” now surfacing in different forms.
Issuing a stern warning to corrupt individuals, the attorney general stressed that corruption will no longer be tolerated in Bangladesh’s transition.
“No corrupt person will be allowed to rise. We are determined to unmask those behind corruption,” he declared.
