Evidence of irregularities and corruption has been found in the distribution of one-time government grants at the Baramchal tea plantation in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar. Although 249 workers were supposed to be given 6,000 taka, the distribution list includes members of the Union Parishad (UP), workers’ panchayat committee
The names of the president and several members of their families have been found.
The investigation committee formed by the upazila administration has recently confirmed the truth of these irregularities. Recently, Baramchal UP has been investigating various irregularities and corruption in the distribution of grants.
A few tea workers submitted a written complaint to the chairman. In view of this, a 9-member investigation committee headed by Ward No. 6 member Sahanur Rahman was formed.
The investigation report was submitted to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) on Thursday afternoon. It says that bribes were taken from workers to get their names on the list. Again, even though some people’s names were on the list, they did not receive the money, while several people whose names were not on the list received the grant. It has been reported that under the Tea Workers’ Quality of Life Improvement Program, a one-time financial grant of Tk 6,000 was given to 5,000 permanent workers of various tea gardens in the upazila in the fiscal year 2024-25. A total of 249 workers of the Baramchal tea garden were given this grant.
The money was allocated. It was said that the money would be sent to each of their bKash numbers. The investigation committee said that they spoke directly to 187 of the 249 beneficiary workers.
The names of Agn? Das, the president of the Bagan workers’ panchayat, his wife Savitri Das, their son Sagar Das and expatriate Suman Das are there. The names of more than one member of 24 other such well-off families are found in the list.
