Stop the cash flow

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Md Abdul Momen has warned that voters often expect money or other benefits during elections and stressed the need to curb the supply of illicit funds in campaigns.

Speaking at the ACC office in Segunbagicha on Monday, Momen explained that election spending typically rises, and controlling the flow of cash depends largely on the suppliers. “There is a demand side and a supply side. We must shut down the supply side,” he said.

The ACC chief called on journalists to play a key role in reporting cases of excessive campaign spending. Candidates are required to submit asset declarations, and any attempt to conceal wealth should be reported to the ACC for investigation, he added.

“If a candidate reports unusually low assets but actually possesses far more, report it immediately. We will take action,” Momen said, drawing on his past experience in handling such complaints.

He cautioned that a surge in black money circulation ahead of the election could fuel inflation and urged authorities to remain vigilant. When asked about ACC monitoring of election candidates, Momen noted that while the commission must operate within its institutional limitations, it will do its best to maintain oversight.

Addressing inconsistencies in affidavits, he acknowledged that the short window between submission and voting makes thorough verification challenging, but suggested the media could help identify discrepancies.
“Black money has no place in elections,” he emphasised. “Even if someone attempts to use legal loopholes, these must be exposed.”

Momen highlighted that several government institutions-including Bangladesh Bank, the Finance Ministry, the Financial Intelligence Unit, and law enforcement agencies-are actively working against holders of illicit funds.

Asked whether the ACC has a specific plan for the upcoming elections, he confirmed that a strategy would be prepared. “This is a direct warning-reject anyone attempting to influence the election through black money,” he concluded.
