Pak PM pledges closer relations with BD

Diplomatic Correspondent :

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan Md. Iqbal Hossain Khan on Friday, stressing the need to further strengthen political, economic, and people-to-people relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, High Commissioner Khan briefed the Prime Minister on ongoing initiatives aimed at deepening the friendship between Dhaka and Islamabad. He expressed optimism about enhancing the historic bonds between the two nations.

Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed his government’s full support for the High Commissioner, wished him success in his diplomatic mission, and voiced confidence in the positive development of bilateral ties.

Recalling earlier “warm and fruitful” discussions between the two governments, Sharif highlighted the importance of boosting trade and enhancing connectivity between their peoples.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote that cooperation in political, economic, and cultural fields must be strengthened. “Pakistan is keen to enhance trade and people-to-people contacts with Bangladesh,” he said.

The High Commissioner also briefed Sharif on steps being taken by both sides to facilitate travel, trade, and wider connectivity. He reiterated Dhaka’s commitment to working hard to build on the “historic bonds of friendship” between the two countries.

Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August last year, relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan have begun to revive after years of stagnation.

The Awami League administration was seen as more aligned with India, while being less engaged with Islamabad. In contrast, the Interim Government led by Prof. Muhammad Yunus has signalled its intention to strengthen ties with Pakistan for mutual benefit, particularly in trade and business.

Diplomatic exchanges have gathered pace. Trade visits between the two countries are increasing, and next week will see the highest-level Pakistani delegation to Dhaka in a decade.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on 23 August for talks on bilateral cooperation, while Minister of Commerce Jam Kamal Khan will travel to Dhaka on 21 August for a four-day visit focused on expanding trade and investment opportunities.
