Tarique for transparent governance

Staff Reporter :
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman emphasised on Saturday that establishing democratic practices across all sectors is essential to ensure government accountability to the people of Bangladesh.
Drawing on his experience living in London, he highlighted how doctors facing abuse and patients denied proper care receive justice in the UK, attributing this to the country’s robust accountability framework. “Such a system of accountability is urgently needed in Bangladesh,” he added.
Speaking virtually at the council session of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), Tarique said the public has high expectations of the BNP, particularly the need to create a proper system that guarantees accountability.
“People from all walks of life are eager to see positive change and transformation in the state system,” he said. “By gradually building a transparent, fair and democratic system nationwide, accountability can be secured at every level.”
Tarique challenged the notion that political parties lack democratic practices, pointing to the DAB council as evidence to the contrary. He expressed confidence that as DAB embraces democratic principles, BNP will similarly advance democracy within its ranks.
The BNP leader acknowledged that despite more than five decades of independence, the democratic process in Bangladesh has often been hindered. Reflecting on his years abroad, Tarique noted that government hospitals in the UK provide at least minimum service due to the established accountability mechanisms.
He stressed that access to entitled services should be universal in Bangladesh, citing the UK model where accountability is embedded in both society and the state system – a standard yet to be achieved in Bangladesh.
The National Council-2025 of DAB, a pro-BNP doctors’ platform, was held at Willes Little Flower School and College in Kakrail, Dhaka.
