Democratic Students’ Union leader Abdul Quader has alleged that Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, is engaging in politics “without restriction” in Dhaka University’s residential halls despite an official ban.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Quader claimed Shibir activists are running a shadow administration in the halls under the guise of disciplinary committees or batch representatives. He alleged that most hall disciplinary committees are tied to Shibir politics, with members selected through manipulated online voting.
Responding to the accusations, DU unit Shibir President SM Farhad dismissed them as attempts to malign the organisation.
The debate over student politics in DU halls reignited on Friday when Chhatra Dal announced convening committees in 18 halls, drawing sharp criticism. Later that night, a group of students staged a protest on campus demanding a ban on political activities in the halls.
In response to the protests, Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan on Friday announced a prohibition on student politics in Dhaka University’s residential halls.
