Imran Haider, the newly appointed High Commissioner of Pakistan to Bangladesh, arrived in Dhaka on Friday morning, according to a statement issued by the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with Pakistan’s Deputy High Commissioner and other officials of the High Commission, welcomed Imran Haider upon his arrival in Dhaka.
On May 11, former High Commissioner Syed Maroof suddenly left Dhaka. On the same day, the Pakistan High Commission informed Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs about Maroof’s departure.
Typically, when a foreign diplomat leaves or arrives at their post, the host country is informed of both the departure and arrival times. However, in this case, the Pakistan High Commission only communicated Maroof’s departure. Later, the High Commission informally notified Dhaka that Maroof was on a two-week leave. Yet, even after more than a month, he did not return to Dhaka.
Amid this situation, Islamabad decided to appoint Imran Haider, Pakistan’s ambassador to Myanmar, as the new envoy to Bangladesh. He replaces former High Commissioner Syed Ahmed Maroof.
According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomat Imran Haider served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Myanmar since March last year. From 2019 to 2023, he was the ambassador to Tajikistan. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Head of Mission in Tehran from 2016 to 2019.
In addition, diplomat Imran Haider has worked in Pakistan’s missions in Madrid, Delhi, the UAE, and New York. He joined Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1996.
