Former Begum Rokeya University VC Dr Kalimullah arrested in graft case

Former Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, was arrested on Thursday morning in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in connection with a corruption case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrest, stating that a DB team apprehended Dr Kalimullah from a residence in the Mohammadpur area.
Dr Kalimullah, widely known for his affiliation with the Awami League and vocal stance during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, was named in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on June 18. The case accuses him and four others of abuse of power, fraud, and embezzlement involving Tk 4 crore through irregularities in various university projects.
The other accused in the case include former BRU Vice Chancellor Dr AKM Noor-un-Nabi, former executive engineer and secretary of the university’s tender evaluation committee Md Jahangir Alam, contractor Md Abdus Salam Bachchu, and MM Habibur Rahman.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, ACC Director General and spokesperson Akhtar Hossain stated that the accused misappropriated a total of Tk 34 crore from multiple sources through collusion.
