‘Tyranny must never return’
Staff Reporter :
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called on the people of Bangladesh to remain united in building a just, equal, and corruption-free society, where the return of tyranny is impossible.
In a message issued on Monday to mark July Uprising Day, Prof Yunus reflected on the historic movement that led to the fall of authoritarian rule exactly one year ago.
“July reignited our hope – hope for a fairer, more equal, and corruption-free Bangladesh,” he said, emphasising that the sacrifices made during the uprising had created a rare opportunity for far-reaching reforms. “We must safeguard this opportunity at all costs.”
He warned that elements linked to the former regime remain active and continue to conspire against the country’s progress. In response, he urged national unity across all divisions to confront and overcome such threats.
“Together, we will build a Bangladesh where tyranny can never rise again,” he declared.
Recalling the events of 5 August 2024, the day the uprising reached its peak, Prof Yunus described it as a defining moment in the nation’s history. “It was on this day, one year ago, that the movement achieved victory and ended years of authoritarian rule,” he said.
The chief adviser offered his congratulations to the people of Bangladesh for their collective efforts and paid tribute to the youth, workers, labourers, and professionals who lost their lives. “My deepest respects go to every martyr of the uprising. Their sacrifice will be remembered with honour,” he added.
Prof Yunus described the uprising as a response to sixteen years of oppressive rule, and a struggle to establish a democratic, accountable system free from corruption and injustice.
He noted that since the formation of the Interim Government, reforms have been initiated across key sectors. Trials related to the events of July are progressing, and efforts are underway to honour those who lost their lives and support the injured.
To further the democratic process, Prof Yunus said the government is holding discussions with political parties and stakeholders on reforming the political and electoral systems.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to handing power back to the people through a peaceful, fair, and transparent election. “This is essential for a sustainable political solution and the foundation of a truly democratic Bangladesh,” he said.
Commemorative events marking the first anniversary of the July Uprising will be held nationwide on Tuesday, 5 August.
