Army probes officer over political links
Staff Reporter :
The Bangladesh Army has launched an investigation into allegations of political involvement by one of its officers, following information received from a law enforcement agency.
In a press release issued on Friday, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) confirmed that a court of inquiry has been formed to look into the claims.
The matter was taken seriously from the outset, and preliminary findings have reportedly lent credibility to the allegations.
According to the ISPR, the officer in question was taken into military custody on 17 July from his residence in the Uttara area of Dhaka. The court of inquiry was established to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.
Upon completion of the inquiry, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with military laws and procedures, based on the findings and available evidence.
The army is also coordinating with the Bangladesh Police and other relevant law enforcement agencies as part of the investigation process.
In addition, a separate inquiry has been initiated into the officer’s unauthorised absence from his designated post. Findings from this investigation will determine further action under the applicable military regulations.
The ISPR reiterated that the Bangladesh Army remains a disciplined, professional, and apolitical institution. It stated that there is zero tolerance for political involvement among its ranks and that any member found to be engaged in such activities would face strict legal consequences.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the officer, holding the rank of Major, is suspected of attending a clandestine meeting in Dhaka allegedly involving former leaders and activists affiliated with the previously ousted Awami League and its associated organisations.
