BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Wednesday warned the interim government that any miscalculation could derail the country’s democratic transition and open the door to the resurgence of fascism, extremism, and radicalism.

“Any wrong move by the government could jeopardize democracy,” Tarique said in a virtual address to a protest rally organized by Dhaka District BNP at Darul Ihsan Madrasa ground in Sreepur, Ashulia. The event was held in memory of those killed during the July 2024 Mass Uprising, including victims allegedly burned near Ashulia Police Station.

Tarique cautioned that the people had entrusted the interim government with guiding the nation post-autocracy, expecting it to restore citizens’ rights. However, he expressed concern that some elements within the government might be exploiting the situation instead of facilitating a return to elected leadership.

“There’s growing doubt over whether the interim government is showing the wisdom and foresight needed to prioritize fair elections,” he said. “Defeated and fugitive fascist forces are waiting in the wings for any mistake to reemerge.”

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also addressed the gathering, urging political parties not to let minor differences derail the democratic process. “Debate is part of democracy, but let’s not allow division to become a path back to authoritarianism,” he said.

He warned that unnecessary internal disputes could pave the way for what he called “the return of fascist Hasina,” and stressed the importance of unity among democratic forces.

“We must come together and solve our differences quickly. A fair and neutral election is the only way to restore a true people’s government,” Fakhrul added.

He condemned the Ashulia killings, calling them a brutal example of state-sponsored violence. “It is heartbreaking that people in this country can be burned alive by officials who were supposed to protect them,” he said.

Fakhrul also criticized former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing her of orchestrating mass killings to cling to power. “She must be held accountable and face trial for the crimes committed under her rule,” he demanded.
