Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul has accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government of committing atrocities during last year’s July uprising that, in his words, surpassed even the brutalities carried out by the Pakistani occupation forces in 1971.

Speaking at a discussion titled “July Mass Killing Trial: Discussion and Documentary Screening” at the Judicial Training Institute in Dhaka on Tuesday, Nazrul alleged that the Awami League government acted like a fascist regime by indiscriminately opening fire on unarmed protesters.
“Even striking an unarmed or wounded person on a battlefield is a war crime. But the fascist Awami League government did far worse by killing innocent people during the mass protests,” Nazrul told the audience.

He further warned that ignoring justice for such crimes would have consequences beyond this world. “Those who deny justice for this massacre will have to answer to Allah,” he said, reaffirming his pledge to ensure accountability.

Nazrul claimed that despite the scale of the killings, the ruling party shows no remorse. “Hasina and her party feel not the slightest guilt for this massacre. If you listen to her leaked audios, you will see how vengeful she remains,” he added.

Referring to the ongoing legal process, Nazrul expressed confidence in the efforts of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Tazul Islam.

“Tazul keeps us updated regularly. I have no doubt about his integrity he cannot be bought, even with billions. He works tirelessly, sometimes until 2 AM, and if he finds any evidence, he rushes to inform me,” he said.

Promising that no future government would be able to derail the trial, Nazrul said, “We are building such a strong foundation that no authority, no matter how powerful, will be able to alter or dismiss the trial process. InshaAllah, justice will be delivered.”

The event was organised by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs as part of the government’s ‘July Reawakening’ programmes.
It also featured the screening of the documentary on Trial of July Carnage and prayers for the victims of the July uprising as well as for those who died in the tragic fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College.
