Chief Adviser to the Interim Government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Monday reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to eliminating terrorism, affirming that Bangladesh will not allow terrorist groups to operate within its borders.
“Combating terrorism is our top priority. We uphold a zero-tolerance policy and will take all necessary actions to eradicate terrorism from the country,” he stated.
Professor Yunus made the remarks during a meeting with US Chargé d’Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka. The Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, briefed reporters following the meeting.
The 40-minute discussion covered a range of bilateral issues, including the ongoing tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the United States.
Jacobson expressed the US government’s continued support for Bangladesh’s reform process and its ongoing transition towards democracy, which is expected to culminate in general elections early next year.
During the meeting, Professor Yunus also updated the US envoy on the activities of the National Consensus-Building Commission, which seeks to build agreement among political parties on key reform agendas.
“I believe the commission, led by Professor Ali Riaz, is making excellent progress. The members are demonstrating strong commitment,” he said.
Bangladesh has consistently maintained a firm stance against terrorism.
In April, following the attack in Pahelgam, Kashmir, Chief Adviser Yunus strongly condemned the violence and conveyed a message of solidarity to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We strongly condemn this heinous act,” he wrote. “Let me reaffirm Bangladesh’s resolute position against terrorism in all its forms.”
