Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus on Sunday commended the Bangladesh Army for its ongoing contributions to national security, disaster response, and support to the civil administration.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Army Headquarters Selection Board-2025 at the Army Headquarters, Prof Yunus praised the professionalism and dedication of army personnel, highlighting their continued role in maintaining internal peace and stability, responding to natural disasters, and safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.

In his address, he expressed deep appreciation for all members of the Bangladesh Army, including the Chief of Army Staff, for their unwavering commitment and service in times of national need.

The Chief Adviser paid tribute to the martyrs and war-wounded of the 1971 Liberation War, including members of the armed forces who laid down their lives for the country.

He also solemnly recalled those injured or martyred in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and honoured the students and civilians affected during the July 2024 mass uprising.

According to a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the first phase of the promotion board will consider eligible officers for advancement to the ranks of Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel.

Addressing members of the selection board, Prof Yunus called for a merit-based and impartial approach to officer promotions.

He stressed the importance of selecting individuals who demonstrate leadership, discipline, integrity, honesty, trustworthiness, loyalty, and overall professional competence.

“Promotion should be free from political influence and based on suitability for future responsibilities,” he said.

He urged the board to prioritise officers who have shown capable leadership in a range of military roles, noting that promotions should reflect a commitment to service over personal or political considerations.

Prof Yunus also reiterated the army’s critical role beyond traditional defence, highlighting its active engagement in disaster management and civil support.

He acknowledged the ongoing involvement of army personnel in various administrative and humanitarian operations and extended his sincere gratitude for their dedication.

Upon arrival at the event, the Chief Adviser was welcomed by Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, his Special Assistant on Defence and National Solidarity, and the Chief of General Staff.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman thanked the Chief Adviser for inaugurating the board and supporting the army’s institutional processes.

The event was attended by senior military officials and government representatives. It concluded with a group photograph and the Chief Adviser signing the visitors’ book.
