BNP activists vandalise NCP’s stage

Staff Reporter :

National Citizen Party’s (NCP) scheduled roadshow has been disrupted at Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar district on Saturday.

The incident, took place at around 4:15 PM, occurred following alleged derogatory remarks made by NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary about BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed during a public rally in the town.

Enraged by the statement, some BNP activists along with an agitated crowd reportedly dismantled the temporary stage built on a vehicle for the roadshow.

Chakaria Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident and said that the convoy carrying the central NCP leaders has already been escorted out of Cox’s Bazar district by law enforcement.

Earlier, during a public rally held in Cox’s Bazar district town Nasir Uddin Patwari said, “During the Awami League’s tenure, Shamim Osman was the famous godfather of Narayanganj. Now I hear that a new godfather has arrived in Cox’s Bazar from Shillong. He is occupying enclosures, seizing people’s land and engaging in extortion. And apparently, he doesn’t understand reform. I won’t name him. The people of Cox’s Bazar, Insha’Allah, will stop such anti-reformists who don’t understand public relations on the streets.”

These remarks, considered insulting to BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, have sparked protest marches across the district.

Although the central NCP leaders have reportedly left Cox’s Bazar district, there are reports that they might be heading back towards Chakaria after making a detour from Lohagara upazila in Chattogram district.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) and spokesperson for Cox’s Bazar District Police Md Jasim Uddin Chowdhury said that law enforcement agencies across the district are on alert.
