Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), with support from the Bangladesh Army, has seized a large consignment of smuggled Indian goods during a special overnight operation along the Sylhet-Sunamganj border.
The coordinated drive, conducted early Friday, targeted multiple border points in the two districts to curb cross-border smuggling activities.
In a press statement, the Sylhet BGB-48 Battalion confirmed that personnel from the Pratappur, Damdamia, Sripur, Bichnakandi, and Sonalichela Border Outposts (BOPs) took part in the operation.
The seized items included a significant quantity of Indian sarees, skin whitening creams, sunglasses, cattle, and boats reportedly used for illegal stone extraction from riverbeds.
In a separate raid, a special patrol team from BGB-48 Battalion, aided by Bangladesh Army troops from the Haripur Camp, uncovered a stockpile of contraband goods hidden inside an abandoned warehouse near the Sari River between Goainghat and Fatehpur.
The items recovered in this raid include large amounts of Indian cosmetic products such as fairness creams, ultra bright cream, skin shine cream, Betnovate-N cream, and Gillette razor blades.
According to BGB estimates, the total value of the seized goods is around Tk six crore.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Nazmul Haque, commanding officer of Sylhet BGB-48 Battalion, confirmed the recovery and said the force will continue its special drives and intelligence-based operations to strengthen border security and curb illegal smuggling and drug trafficking.
He added that legal action is being taken regarding the seized items.
