The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has randomly selected 15,494 income tax returns for audit for the 2023–24 tax year, aiming to identify cases of tax evasion.
According to an official media release, the selection was carried out digitally under a Random Selection method, covering 0.5% of returns filed in each tax circle. This approach serves as a temporary measure until the full implementation of a fully automated system based on a Risk-Based Audit Selection Criterion.
To avoid duplication, the NBR excluded taxpayers whose returns were audited in the last two years. The board also acknowledged that while the random method ensures transparency and impartiality, it may not always yield optimal outcomes.
The NBR stated that complete digitization of all paper-based returns is still ongoing. Once finished, it will enable a more effective, transparent, and automated audit process, boosting revenue collection through better-targeted audits.
