Court asks why Yunus not named ‘nat’l reformer’

The High Court has issued a rule asking the government to explain why Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government, should not be officially recognised as the “National Reformer of the New Bangladesh.”

In the same order, the court also questioned why those killed during the recent July-August civic uprising – including Abu Sayed, Mir Mugdho, and Wasim – have yet to be declared national heroes.

The rule further asked why a verified and comprehensive list of individuals martyred in the movement should not be formally compiled and published in the government gazette.

The bench, led by Justice Fahmida Quader, directed the Cabinet Secretary, Law Secretary, and other relevant government officials to respond to the queries within four weeks.

The petition was filed by Advocate Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who appeared on behalf of the petitioner. Assistant Attorney General Ikramul Kabir represented the state during the hearing.
