NSTU Correspondent:

Police have arrested three people in connection with an attack on three students of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU). Begumganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) LitonDewan confirmed the arrests on Monday afternoon.

According to OC LitonDewan, the arrestees were sent to court after primary interrogation. The detainees have been identified as Tarek, an electrician; Ahad, an employee at a scrap shop; and Shamim, a day labourer working in Dhaka.
Police said during primary questioning, the three confessed to the attack. They claimed they assaulted the students because they resembled three people with whom they had a dispute earlier in Cox’s Bazar.

OC LitonDewan said, “We have found evidence of more people being involved in the incident. Efforts are underway to bring them under the law soon.”

Earlier, on Sunday afternoon, NSTU students had given a 12-hour ultimatum demanding the immediate arrest of the attackers. They warned of tougher programmes if the culprits were not arrested. Police managed to detain the accused before the ultimatum expired.

On July 12, Animesh Deb Nath, a first-year student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) Department of NSTU, and two of his classmates were attacked while returning to Noakhali from Chattogram. The incident took place in a local bus in the Chaumuhani area of Begumganj. The attackers tried to strangle one student and beat up the others with sticks and punches. They snatched Tk 6,000 from the students and also attempted to snatch their mobile phones.

The following day, the victims filed a case with Begumganj Model Police Station, naming 7–8 unidentified persons as accused.
News of the arrests has brought some relief among the students two days after the incident.
