US help sought to bolster BD’s security capability

Staff Reporter :

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has urged the United States to enhance its cooperation in bolstering Bangladesh’s security capabilities.
The request came during a courtesy meeting with US Chargé d’Affaires Megan Bouldin at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Their discussion covered a broad spectrum of bilateral topics, including public safety, counter-terrorism strategies, criminal justice processes, and initiatives to combat online harassment targeting young women.

Welcoming the US envoy, the adviser acknowledged the United States as a longstanding partner of Bangladesh, particularly in the fields of national security and counter-terrorism. He also expressed gratitude for past US assistance-especially in training and supplying equipment-which has played a vital role in upgrading the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit. He called for continued collaboration in this regard.

In her remarks, Chargé d’Affaires Bouldin reiterated Washington’s ongoing commitment to working with Dhaka on matters of national security.

She emphasized that terrorism and militant threats pose challenges for all nations, including Bangladesh. However, she also observed that under the previous Awami League administration, certain politically motivated crackdowns were at times mischaracterized as counter-terrorism actions, potentially detracting from the focus on authentic security threats. Despite this, she underscored the continued need for vigilance.
