BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the Awami League has acted in favor of fascism and genocide, and every individual involved must be punished.
They should be brought under the rule of law. Especially the party chief Sheikh Hasina-her trial has already begun. We hope that everyone involved in these killings, the genocide, and the fascist attacks will be tried. From that perspective, if the party is brought under the purview of the law, then it too should be held accountable and tried collectively.”
The BNP leader made these remarks while speaking to journalists at the Neuroscience Hospital in Agargaon, after visiting Dr. Abdul Quddus, a valiant freedom fighter, member of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council, and Chairman of the Zia Parishad.
In response to a journalist’s question-referring to various evidence published by Bangladeshi media against the recent fascism and specifically a BBC report released today, which includes an audio clip where Sheikh Hasina is heard giving orders to shoot and kill-Fakhrul was asked: “What is your opinion about such a party? Should they be banned? Should they be allowed to participate in future elections? Should they be tried?”
In reply, BNP Secretary General said, “You all know well that the Awami League is responsible for torture, oppression, killings, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial executions. The BNP has been the biggest victim of these crimes-and I personally have faced 112 cases and been imprisoned 13 times.
We have always believed that any political party that supports fascism and acts on its behalf must be held accountable. The Awami League has done exactly that, and every one of its members must face justice under the law. Especially party chief Sheikh Hasina, who is solely responsible for the killings of people in their houses. Her trial has already begun. We hope that all those involved in these killings, genocides, fascist acts, and attacks will be brought to justice. If the party is brought under legal accountability collectively, then it must be tried accordingly.”
He added, “If there is one true force for democracy, it is the BNP. And if there is any party that has fought the most for democracy, it is the BNP. It was the BNP that took Bangladesh from one-party autocracy to a multiparty democratic system. Now, we must all come together to save this country. Every political party has a responsibility to put the country back on the right track.
The sooner that happens, the better. So, those who think that elections are unnecessary-I believe they should reconsider. Elections are essential for the people. We need an elected government. Elections establish a relationship between the people and the state. That is why we say reform and elections are not separate-they must go hand in hand.”
