Paikgachha fish ponds submerged due to heavy rains
Khulna Correspondent :
The low-lying areas of Paikgachha in Koyra were due to heavy rains, causing extensive damage to crops. Thousands of fish ponds have been submerged in the monsoon water. Public suffering has increased. Various government and private offices, including the Upazila Agriculture Office and the court premises, and educational institutions have been flooded with rainwater. Heavy rains have flooded a vast area of Paikgachha twice in a few days.
This year, there has been continuous light and heavy rain since the first of the month of Ashadh. This has caused extensive damage by flooding the seedbeds of Aman rice, vegetable fields, fish lease pens, nurseries, ponds, gardens, roads and homes.
Although Gadaipur, Haridhali, Kapilmuni and Raruli of Paikgachha are high areas, the remaining 6 unions are located in low-lying areas. All these areas get submerged in water if there is a little rain.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahera Nazneen said that various areas of the upazila have been flooded due to the heavy rains. Teams are working to keep the river sluice gates open for water drainage and to clean various water drainage drains.
