Sylhet Bureau :
A woman from the UK is being harassed in Khadimpur village of Umarpur Union under Osmaninagar in Sylhet, with the connivance of two police officers. Awami League leader Golam Rabbani Sohel is trying to seize the woman’s house using fake documents. The victim, Hazera Ali Panna, is not getting any redress despite filing a case in this regard. The victim’s house security guard, retired Ansar VDP member Md. Kamal Hossain, made this allegation at a press conference organized at the Sylhet Press Club on Wednesday.
In a written statement, he said that Golam Rabbani Sohel has become reckless with the help of District Police Officer Ashrafuzzaman Ashiq and Officer-in-Charge of Osmaninagar Police Station Monayem Mia in Sylhet. During the last fascist government, Sohel created a paradise of crime in the area. Hazera Ali Panna, a UK expatriate, is a simple woman. He occasionally comes to the country on impulse. On April 30, a case was filed at Osmaninagar Police Station against Golam Rabbani Suhel for trying to seize Hazera Ali Panna’s land using fake documents and demanding a ransom of Tk 35 lakh. After the case was filed, Sohel and his associates started threatening Hazera Ali Panna. The gang vandalized Hazera Ali Panna’s house 5 times, looted it and opened fire with a shotgun in public. Although two more cases were filed at the police station after attaching the CCTV footage of the incident, the police sided with the Awami League leader. The police expressed reluctance to file FIRs in the three cases filed for the public firing of weapons and bullets and demanding a ransom of Tk 35 lakh. Kamal Hossain alleged that the OC of the police station, Monayem Mia, took a large bribe from the plaintiff Hazera Ali Panna to register the case. He said that even after a long time since the case was filed, the accused have not been arrested. In this regard, a written complaint to the DIG and Superintendent of Police of Sylhet did not yield any results. Later, on June 29, a complaint was filed against these two police officers at the IGP Complaint Monitoring Cell at the ‘Police Headquarters’. He said that police officer Ashrafuzzaman Ashiq, who was in charge of Osmaninagar Circle during the fascist government, was a ‘crony’ police officer. He played a major role in suppressing opposition party leaders and activists and suppressing the anti-discrimination movement. Even after the change of government, he has been working to implement the Awami League’s agenda by becoming an administrative officer to create riots and anarchy in various villages, groups and neighborhoods of the upazila to put the interim government in trouble. Kamal Mia alleged that recently, the general secretary of the West Pailonpur Union Awami League, Aksar Ali, an accused in multiple murder cases of the anti-discrimination movement, was arrested by the mob and handed over to the police. At that time, his relatives snatched the accused along with handcuffs from the police. Later, with the intervention of a journalist, political leader and police, the key to the handcuffs was secretly delivered in exchange for money. When it became known that the handcuffs were being returned without arresting the accused, the video of the accused snatching the handcuffs from the police went viral on social media. At one point, Soom Television published a special report on the matter. The scene of the police station OC trying to manipulate a journalist by paying him money to not publish the news was also published in the news. In that report, Chhatra Dal leader Chabbir Ahmed spoke against the police. A few days later, the police arrested this Chhatra Dal leader in an old case. Kamal Hossain said that when the political context changed on August 5, police officer Ashrafuzzaman Ashiq fled from his office. When the police station started operating with the whole country, Ashrafuzzaman changed circles. He increased his closeness with the political leaders and activists who benefited. He was also in control of the sugar smuggling syndicate during the Awami League government. A few days after the police station started operating, Md. Monayem Mia took over as OC.
At the press conference, Kamal Hossain sought the intervention of higher levels of the administration to protect lives and property from this gang.
