Sylhet protesters call for JCD leader Liton’s death penalty to be revoked

A former member of Sylhet District Chhatra Dal, Abdul Malik Liton, who was detained in a drug case as a result of the political conspiracy of the autocratic Awami League government. The court has issued a formal death sentence against him in this fabricated case. The decision to suspend this verdict and demand his unconditional release was appealed to the government and the judiciary. The speakers at the protest march and meeting warned of a stricter program if Chhatra Dal leader Liton is not released immediately.

The protest march was held at Mamar Bazar Point in Jaflong at 3 pm on Wednesday (July 2) organized by BNP and its affiliates.

The protest march met at Mamar Bazar Point after circling the main roads of the area. Chaired by Jubo dal leader Gafur Al Mamun and moderated by East Jaflong Chhatra Dal General Secretary Sabbir Ahmed Sujan,
the speakers said that the court has given the death sentence against Liton in a case of revenge and politically framed by the previous Awami League government. They demanded that the court’s verdict be immediately suspended and his release. The attention of the interim government and the law and justice department has been sought to suspend the death sentence of Liton, a victim of political revenge, and take measures to release him.
The protest meeting was addressed by Upazila Jubo Dal joint convener Mizanur Rahman Helowar, Chhatra Dal joint convener Yusuf Ahmed, Upazila Chhatra Dal former joint general secretary Hasan Ahmed, youth leader Abdur Rahim, East Jaflong Chhatra Dal organizing secretary Usman Ali, among others. People from different classes and professions of the area participated in the protest procession.

Incidentally, Abdul Malik Liton, son of Abdus Shahid Mia of Lakherpar village of Purba Jaflong union of Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet, along with 2 other accused were arrested by the police on September 26, 2019, along with 1 kg of drugs (heroin). In this case, the learned court announced the death sentence against the sole accused Abdul Malik Liton on October 5, 2023 and acquitted the 2 accused.
