Deer poaching continues in Sundarbans

The mischief of deer poachers in the Eastern Sundarbans has not been stopped. On Monday morning, a hunter was caught by the forest guards while hunting deer by setting traps in the Sundarbans of the Kachikhali Sanctuary area. A large quantity of traps was seized. At that time, two other hunters, however, managed to escape.

According to forest department sources, forest guards led by Forester Dilip Majumdar, Smart Team Leader of the Sharankhola Forest Range of the Eastern Division of the Sundarbans (in Bagerhat district), saw three hunters waiting to set traps to catch deer in the forest of Sukhpara Canal area outside the Kachikhali Sanctuary Center on Monday morning (June 30). The hunters started running away into the forest when they saw the forest guards. The forest guards chased the hunters and managed to arrest a hunter named Ariful Islam Dulal (40). The forest guards told, the arrested poacher hails from the village Korailya under Patharghata Upazila in Barguna district. The other two poachers fled away into the deep forest. The forest guards seized 300 deer-catching necklaces, traps, knives, and other hunting equipments from the spot.

The mischief of deer poachers in the Eastern Sundarbans has not been stopped. Forest guards the recovered deer hunting traps from different places in the Sundarbans. Currently, Kachikhali, Sukhpara, Chandeshwar and surrounding areas of the Sundarbans are known to be the hotspots for deer hunting deer, according to forest sources.

Rana Dev, Sharankhola Range Officer (ACF) of the Eastern Division of the Sundarbans told, in this connection a case was lodged with the local PS under Forest Act against the deer poacher arrested with traps in the Sundarbans and he was sent to the court at Bagerhat district headquarters.
