Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh held a meeting with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday to discuss the upcoming national elections and potential areas of bilateral cooperation.

The hour-long meeting began at 3:00 pm at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, confirmed BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan. Senior BNP leaders, including Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Organising Secretary Shama Obaed, were also present.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Khosru said the discussion covered a range of topics, including preparations for the next national polls scheduled for early February 2026. “We exchanged views on the preparations by the government, political parties, and BNP for the election,” he said.

He added that the Canadian envoy assured them of his country’s willingness to support Bangladesh’s electoral process and noted Canada’s ongoing engagement with the Election Commission.

The talks also touched on the broader scope of Bangladesh-Canada relations. Khosru said discussions included prospects for future cooperation if the BNP assumes power, with a particular focus on agriculture, technology, education, and healthcare.

“Canada has the capacity to assist Bangladesh in modernising its agriculture through advanced technology and development programmes,” Khosru noted. “We also explored potential partnerships in the IT sector, as well as in improving education and healthcare services.”
