‘Mob justice never acceptable’

Staff Reporter :

“Mob justice is never acceptable under any circumstances,” said Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture.

He expressed concern over the way former Chief Election
Commissioner KM Nurul Huda was apprehended, describing the incident as an unacceptable example of mob justice.

Speaking to journalists on Monday (June 23) during a visit to the Horticulture Centre in Mouchak, Gazipur, the adviser said, “The way mob justice was carried out during the detention of former CEC Nurul Huda is unfortunate.

If any law enforcement personnel were involved in the incident despite their presence at the scene, the matter will be investigated and legal action will be taken.”

He also clarified recent reports about the arrest of another former Chief Election Commissioner, Kazi Habibul Awal.

“The news of his arrest published yesterday is incorrect. He has not been arrested. Only Nurul Huda was detained from Uttara,” he stated.
Addressing another issue, the adviser announced that a law is being formulated to prevent the illegal occupation of agricultural land, emphasising the need to protect such land for sustainable agriculture.

Speaking about agricultural productivity, he added, “We must increase the production of local fruits alongside imported ones to ensure our native varieties do not disappear.”

When asked about the rising incidents of robbery in Gazipur, the adviser said, “The number of police officers will not be increased, but surveillance will be intensified to prevent robberies and ensure these criminals cannot continue their activities.”

During the visit, the adviser toured various sections of the horticulture center, interacted with officials and employees, and provided guidance on future actions.

Among others present during the visit were Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin, Superintendent of Police Dr. Chowdhury Jaber Sadeque, Kaliyakoir Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kawsar Ahmed, Horticulture Centre’s Enamul Haque, and senior officials from the police and agriculture ministry.
