Controversial AL leader Bulu still active abroad

Al Azim Sarkar Bulu, a resident of Toperbari village in Kushura Union under Dhamrai, Dhaka, and a self-proclaimed expatriate leader of the Awami League, is allegedly involved in various misdeeds even after fleeing the country. Despite being abroad, he is said to be funding and influencing local political activities, drawing widespread criticism from residents.
Locals allege that Bulu, who rose to power under the patronage of ruling party leaders, created a reign of terror in Kushura Union. He reportedly harassed and persecuted opposition BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami supporters and filed numerous false cases against them. Many claim that due to his strong political backing, no one dared to speak against him at the time.
According to local sources, Bulu established a party office in his own market in front of the Kushura Union Parishad office. The office regularly hosted activists from the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League, all reportedly funded by him. He maintained strong ties with two influential MPs and local vice-chairpersons, using those connections to tighten his grip over the area.
A former union leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Though Bulu is a known Awami League leader, he used the party to instill fear and suppress dissent. Even from abroad, he continues to threaten locals through his associates.”
Following the political changes on August 5, angry locals demolished Bulu’s party office. However, residents claim that he continues to exert influence through financial support and loyal followers.
The people of Kushura are now demanding a proper investigation into Bulu’s alleged misdeeds and that he be brought back to face justice in Bangladesh. One resident said, “Bulu became a symbol of Awami League’s misrule. Allowing him to operate freely is an injustice to the people.”
Local Awami League leaders declined to comment on the matter.
