Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi strongly condemned recent Israeli attacks, calling them a direct violation of international law and an assault on diplomatic processes. He made the statement on Friday during a high-level meeting with European officials in Geneva, Switzerland.
Speaking amid heightened regional tensions, Araghchi said the Israeli strike occurred at a critical juncture just as Iran was on the verge of resuming diplomatic talks with the United States.
“We were at the threshold of a meeting scheduled for June 15, aimed at resolving misunderstandings surrounding our peaceful nuclear program. Israel’s attack was not only a betrayal of that initiative, but also an unprecedented breach of United Nations norms,” said the Iranian diplomat.
The Iranian Foreign Minister urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take immediate and decisive action against Israel.
“Action must be taken now. Otherwise, the very foundation of the UN-based international legal order will be severely damaged,” he warned.
Araghchi stressed that such attacks undermine global diplomatic efforts and could derail years of negotiations aimed at fostering stability in the Middle East.
During the meeting, Araghchi described himself as a man who has dedicated his life to dialogue and diplomacy.
“I am a seasoned diplomat and also a veteran of the imposed war initiated by Saddam Hussein against Iran.
I know what it takes to defend the motherland,” he said, highlighting his dual identity as both a negotiator and a defender of national sovereignty.
Tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated in recent months, with Israel accusing Iran of covert nuclear ambitions and Tehran denouncing what it views as illegal military provocations.
The Geneva meeting, involving key European stakeholders, was originally intended to focus on diplomatic pathways to revive nuclear discussions.
However, the unexpected Israeli aggression has added urgency and complexity to the diplomatic agenda.
While no immediate international sanctions or resolutions were announced, diplomats present at the meeting reportedly acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and committed to further discussions.
