Anisul, Mosharraf remanded
Staff Reporter :
A Dhaka court has granted separate remands for two former ministers in connection with cases filed over incidents during anti-discrimination protests. Former Law Minister Anisul Huq has been placed on a five-day remand and former Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain on a three-day remand.
The orders were issued on Wednesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Mizbahur Rahman following hearings on police remand petitions in two separate cases filed with Shahbag and Paltan Model Police Stations.
Anisul Huq was shown arrested in a case filed over the killing of jhut (scrap textile) trader Md. Monir during a protest in Shahbag, and police sought a 10-day remand for his interrogation.
Meanwhile, police also sought a seven-day remand for Mosharraf Hossain and Bangladesh People’s Party (BPP) Chairman Babul Chakari in connection with an attempted murder case filed over an attack on Ganaodhikar Parishad activist Badrul Islam Saymon.
Both former ministers were brought to court from jail for the hearing.
Defense lawyers appealed for cancellation of the remand and requested bail. After the hearing, the magistrate granted five days’ remand for Anisul Huq and three days for Mosharraf Hossain.
According to the Monir murder case, on August 5, 2023, during an anti-discrimination protest near Chankharpul in the Shahbagh area, scrap trader Md. Monir joined students and citizens in a demonstration.
