Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday that the country’s law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to maintain law and order during the upcoming national election. Their deployment will begin as soon as the Election Commission (EC) announces the election schedule.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a meeting of the core committee on law and order at the Secretariat.
The statement comes in the backdrop of recent political developments, including a meeting in London between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. According to sources, they discussed key national matters, with indications that the general election might take place in the first half of February next year.
Asked about election-related preparations, Adviser Jahangir said law enforcers are ready and awaiting EC instructions.
Regarding the issue of cross-border push-ins from India, he confirmed that discussions were held with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka. He urged media outlets to shed light on the issue, noting that Bangladesh has asked India to follow proper procedures if the people being sent are indeed Bangladeshi citizens—something India is reportedly not complying with.
On another note, the adviser addressed the recent crime in Uttara, where suspects impersonating members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) snatched money from individuals. He assured that authorities are on maximum alert and are actively working to arrest those involved.
