Jamaat to regain electoral symbol: EC

Staff Reporter :

The Election Commission (EC) has reached a unanimous decision to reinstate the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party, along with its traditional election symbol, the scales (d?ripalla).

The announcement was made on Wednesday afternoon by Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah following the EC’s sixth full commission meeting held at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon.

Addressing the media, Commissioner Sanaullah said, “We have considered the issue of the party’s symbol. Jamaat-e-Islami was registered in 2008 with the d?ripalla symbol. According to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), once a symbol is allocated to a party, it remains reserved for that party.”

The decision comes in the wake of a recent Supreme Court ruling on June 1, which overturned a previous High Court verdict that had declared Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration illegal. The Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, directed the EC to resolve all pending issues concerning the party’s registration in accordance with the Constitution.

The apex court emphasized that any unresolved matters – including the pending registration issue and other legal complexities – must be addressed by the Election Commission without delay, adhering strictly to constitutional mandates.

Commissioner Sanaullah added, “In light of the court’s directive and based on legal consistency, the EC has decided to restore Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration, including its previously assigned symbol.”
